[Talk about learning to play a musical instrument]

I have taken music lessons since I was young.
In grade school, I used to take piano lessons.
I learned to piano for about six years.
So much time has passed that I'm not very good at tickling the ivories any more.
But I learned how to read music when I was young and I think it helped me develop character.

As an adult, I wanted to learn how to play an instrument again.
I have been learning to play the classical guitar since a few years ago.
I take lessons at a nearby music school.
I also practice at home every chance I get.
I can play the songs I want pretty well now.
This year, I'm trying my hand at the ukulele. 
I feel lucky to be able to play an instrument.

 

나는 어렸을 때부터 악기를 배웠다.
초등학교 때는 피아노 학원에 다녔다.
피아노를 대략 6년 정도 배웠다.
시간이 오래 지나서 지금은 피아노 건반을 치는 것이 서투르다.
그렇지만 어린 나이에 악보를 보는 법을 배워서, 인성 발달에 도움이 되었던 것 같다.

성인이 되어 다시 악기 연주를 배우고 싶은 생각이 들었다.
그래서 몇 년 전부터 클래식 기타를 배우고 있다.
근처 음악 학원에서 레슨을 받고 집에서도 틈틈이 연습을 한다.
이제 원하는 곡을 제법 잘 연주할 수 있다.
올해는 우쿨렐레에 도전하고 있다.
악기를 다룰 수 있다는 것은 정말 행운인 것 같다.

  A : Wow, I didn't know you're such a whiz at the piano!
  B : I'm not that good. I just began learning when I was young.
  A : No, I mean it. You really know what you're doing.
  B : Do you know how to play any instruments?
  A : Me? I play the electric guitar. I was in a band back in college.
  B : Really? That's cool.
  A : But I haven't played in ages. I've forgotten everything I knew.
  B : You should learn to play again as a hobby. You'll soon get the hang of it.
